The Department of Astronomy at the University of Bologna invites applications for three postdoctoral research grants for activities within the research project: "Gravitational Lensing and Cosmology".

ALMA MATER STUDIORUM - UNIVERSITA' DI BOLOGNA

These positions will be funded by the EU through the contract IDEAS "GLENCO" (PI Dr R.B. Metcalf). The researchers will work on tools and methods for extracting astrophysical and cosmological information from gravitational lensing observations.  An excellent applicant would have a strong background in numerical methods, radio or optical observations, astrophysics and cosmology. The work will be supervised by Dr. Metcalf with some opportunity for self-directed research.
The positions are initially for one year extendable to three years.
The positions must start no later than April 1, 2013. The amount of each research grant is 26174,00 Euros per year, which is exempt from income tax, but subject to compulsory social security contribution.
The deadline for applications is June 29th 2012.

The amount of the research grant is 26174,00 Euros per year, which is exempt from income tax, but subject to compulsory social security contribution. This position is funded by the EU contract IDEAS "GLENCO" (PI Dr R.B. Metcalf) and by the ASI COFIS (PI Prof L.

Moscardini). The researcher will work on numerical and statistical methods in strong gravitational lensing and hydrodynamics. A good applicant would have a strong background in numerical simulations, astrophysics and cosmology.  The work will be supervised by the Dr. Metcalf and Prof. Moscardini with the researchers time split between research projects and an opurtunity for some self-directed research.

The Department of Astronomy of the University of Bologna invites applications for a number of PhD positions.

 

UNIVERSITA' «ALMA MATER STUDIORUM» DI BOLOGNA

One of these positions is devoted to "Computer modelling of Strong Gravitational Lensing" (EU IDEAS project "GLENCO", P.I. Dr. Metcalf) and one to "COSMIC-LAB: the star cluster laboratory" (IDEAS project "COSMIC-LAB", P.I. Prof. F. Ferraro). Other three positions are available for researches, which can be freely chosen  among the various areas in which the Department is active. These include Stars, Stellar evolution and Chemistry of Galaxies; Galaxy dynamics; Formation and evolution of galaxies; Physics and evolution of AGN; Large-Scale Structure, Galaxy clusters and Cosmology; Radioastronomy; High-Energy Astrophysics; Astronomical Technology (http://www.astronomia.unibo.it/Astronomia/Ricerca/Progetti+e+attivita/default.htm).

Two further positions could receive financial support from other sources.

 

The PhD students can also take advantage of the research opportunities available at the three institutes of the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) in Bologna: the Astronomical Observatory (INAF-OABO, http://www.bo.astro.it), the Radio Astronomy Institute (IRA, http://www.ira.inaf.it/Home.html), and the Space Astrophysics and Cosmic Physics Institute (IASF, http://www.iasfbo.inaf.it).

 

The University of Bologna, founded in 1088, is the oldest University in Europe. The Astronomy Department consists of about 20 members of faculty, 20 postdoctoral associates and 20 PhD students. English is the common language at all the astronomical institutes. Bologna is a friendly and lively town, where the University with about 100000 students plays a fundamental role.

 

PhD positions are funded for three years. The yearly amount of the scholarship is euro 13638,47. This amount is increased by 50% for working visits abroad lasting from a minimum one month to a maximum of

18 months.
